Q&A with Licensed Landscape Architects

The Prewett, Read & Associates team answers some of the most frequently asked questions we’ve heard over the past two decades in the landscape industry.

What is a landscape architect?

Holding a professional license, landscape architects perform services for landscape development or enhancement, including consultation, design, preparation of drawings and construction documents and construction oversight.

What does a landscape architect do?

Landscape architects can start with developing site plans that preserve natural features of a site and provide the layout for the placement of improvements, including buildings, drainage, driveways, motor courts, sidewalks, summer kitchens, swimming pools, fountains, retaining walls, fencing and gates. In addition to the site plan, landscape architects can provide landscape design that ties all the elements of a site together, with detailed hardscape and planting plans, to create the client’s style preferences and specific needs.

Are there specific questions to ask prospective landscape architects in Houston?

Yes, Prewett, Read & Associates recommends you ask a variety of questions before choosing a landscape architect. We suggest you ask for recommendations and request to speak with references. You also want to ensure you are working with properly insured and licensed professionals throughout your project.

How long has Prewett, Read & Associates been in the landscape business?

We were established in 1998. This year, we celebrate 20 years in the industry.

How much do you charge, and what does that include?

The initial consultation we have is free of charge. At that point, we listen to your requirements and ideas for your space and share our recommendations. The budget should also be discussed to clarify everyone’s expectations. Sometimes this step involves a team of design professionals (architects, interior designers, engineers) working together to understand the client’s goals.  After that, we develop a design encompassing the elements that were discussed. Design fees are billed hourly and can include plan views, sketches and 3D views when appropriate. There is no set cost we charge as projects vary depending on the scope of work.

Who will be working on the project design?

A comprehensive team of landscape architects, landscape designers and other landscape professionals will be part of the design process.

How long do projects take to complete?

Project length varies depending on the seasons and workload. The Prewett, Read & Associates team completes the landscape installation, including bed preparation, grading and planting. If your project incorporates hardscapes, we serve as the general contractor, coordinating, scheduling and overseeing every aspect of it, including inspections.
