Frequently Asked Questions

At Prewett, Read & Associates, we’re committed to helping you make the most informed decisions regarding your landscape. We encourage you to review our list of questions and answers below to learn more about us and our process.

  • What are the benefits of professional landscaping?

Professional landscaping is one of the best ways to transform your outdoor living space while also adding value to your home. Aside from advising on what materials go best together, professional landscape firms, such as ours, know when specific plants will thrive and how to best maintain them, protecting the value of your investment.

  • What is a design-build firm and what are the advantages to me as a customer?

In short, instead of hiring an architect to draw your plan and subsequently hiring a contractor to build it, we handle both. We specialize in the design and construction of everything outside of your home, including irrigation systems, landscapes, pools, hardscapes, outdoor kitchens, lighting and more. Additionally, we serve as your single point of contact throughout the project and provide undivided accountability for the budget, schedule and quality of workmanship. Because of our focus and dedication, we reduce the risk of miscommunication, errors and overruns between contractors.

  • What is horticulture?

Horticulture is the science of growing and maintaining healthy plants and flowers through an integrated management plan that consists of proper fertilization, insect and disease control and watering.

  • Why do I need an irrigation system?

Appropriate watering is vital for preserving the appearance, health and value of your landscape. An irrigation system ensures your plants and flowers are watered the right amount and at the right time. Additionally, a properly installed home irrigation system will dramatically reduce overspray, as well as prevent over- or under-watering, allowing you to also conserve water and money.

  • What areas do you serve?

Currently, we work predominately within the Houston city limits. If you live outside of this area, but within Greater Houston, we invite you to still contact us to discuss your project needs, as we may be able to accommodate you.

  • What should I have ready for our first consultation?

We will always bring our own ideas, but ask that you if you have clippings or samples of things you like, that you have them ready. A great resource and source of inspiration is Houzz.com.

  • If permits are required, do you handle obtaining these?

Certain construction and installation projects will require permits, which will be obtained from local authorities on your behalf.

  • What licenses does your firm possess?

Our experienced professionals are licensed landscape architects, irrigators and pesticide applicators, bringing unmatched expertise to your job. Additionally, Prewett, Read and Associates holds a nursery floral license through the Texas Department of Agriculture, which allows us to sell and distribute plants in Texas.
